Spotify adds 5M premium users and hits record operating income

Spotify announced on Tuesday that it added 5 million premium subscribers in the first quarter, marking a 12% year-over-year increase. This boost brings its total premium base to 268 million—a milestone that ranks as the second-highest ever and represents the largest Q1 net addition since 2020. You can review the detailed figures in their shareholder deck.

Strong Financial Performance

In addition to the surge in premium subscribers, Spotify reported a record quarterly operating income of €509 million (around $528 million). Although this figure fell short of its guidance of €548 million ($625 million), total revenue still jumped 15% year-over-year to reach €4.2 billion ($4.8 billion). The solid financial numbers underscore Spotify’s ability to thrive in a competitive streaming market.

Expanding User Base

Along with premium subscribers, the music-streaming leader now serves 678 million monthly active users overall. Of these, 423 million are on the ad-supported plan. This robust user base reinforces Spotify’s leading position as it continues to capitalize on both subscription and advertising revenues.

Diversifying Content and Monetization

Fresh off a profitability milestone in the previous quarter, during which operating income reached €477 million ($509.48 million), Spotify is not just resting on its laurels. The platform continues to outperform competitors like Apple Music and Amazon Music by expanding its content offerings. With a growing library of video podcasts—now boasting 330,000 shows—the company is also investing in new monetization channels.

Innovative Programs and Global Rollouts

Spotify’s commitment to creator success is evident in its Spotify Partner Program, which has paid out more than $100 million to podcast creators in the first quarter alone. In addition, the service recently introduced its AI Playlist feature in over 40 new markets. Some of the regions now enjoying this innovation include:

  • The Bahamas
  • Fiji
  • Ghana
  • Jamaica
  • Kenya
  • Singapore
  • And many more

These developments clearly illustrate Spotify’s multi-faceted strategy—from boosting subscription growth and revenue to fostering a vibrant ecosystem for content creators and listeners worldwide.
