Instagram Edits topped 7M downloads in first week, a bigger launch than CapCut’s
Instagram Edits, Meta’s new video creation app designed specifically for Instagram reels, stories, and social posts, has made a remarkable debut. During its first two days, the app was downloaded nearly 703,000 times on iOS devices, a figure that stands around 37 times higher than the initial numbers seen by ByteDance’s CapCut when it launched.
Record-Breaking Launch Statistics
According to data from the app intelligence provider Appfigures, Instagram Edits quickly gained traction. By Thursday, the app had reached 1.2 million downloads on iOS and an impressive 5.9 million downloads on Android, registering a total of 7.1 million installations. In comparison, CapCut managed only 83.5K downloads across both platforms during its first three days. While CapCut was initially available in fewer global markets, even hypothetical adjustments to its figures would still leave Instagram Edits in the lead.

US Market Dominance
The app made an even bigger impact in the U.S., where it recorded 381,000 downloads within just three days. In stark contrast, CapCut’s debut in the U.S. garnered only 3,400 downloads, making Instagram Edits’ launch over 112 times larger in this key region. This overwhelming response not only underlines the strength of Instagram Edits but also highlights the vast reach of Meta’s ecosystem.
Impressive Chart Performances and Future Prospects
Upon launching on April 22, Instagram Edits secured the No. 1 spot on the U.S. iPhone App Store—toppling even the overall apps list and the top non-game category. It maintained strong rankings over the following days, despite a slight drop from the top position. In contrast, CapCut settled at No. 14 overall and No. 10 among non-game apps on the U.S. store after its initial three-day period.
However, while Instagram Edits boasts a stellar start, catching up to CapCut’s broad global user base remains a challenge. CapCut, popular among TikTok creators, has amassed 1.22 billion downloads worldwide (excluding China) since its launch in April 2020. For those interested, the app is available on both iOS and Android platforms.
User Reactions and Feature Insights
Feedback from creators has been mixed. Social media marketing consultant Lia Haberman noted in her recent newsletter that many users appreciate Instagram Edits for its:
- User-friendly interface
- Integrated analytics features
- Ad-free experience
- Support for 4K video quality
- Watermark-free exports
On the other hand, some critics have highlighted that the app still falls short when compared to CapCut, lacking features like pre-designed templates and a wide array of transition effects.
