Google Wallet to add support for digital IDs in more states

Google has exciting news as it expands its digital ID services in Google Wallet. Alongside a rollout to additional states, the company is introducing a secure way to verify your age privately, and the service will now be available in 50 more countries.

Expanding Digital ID Support Throughout the U.S.

Residents in Arkansas, Montana, Puerto Rico, and West Virginia will soon have the option to save their government-issued digital IDs directly to Google Wallet. In addition, mobile IDs can be used at the DMV by people in Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, and New Mexico.

Travel and ID Verification Made Easier

As the May 7, 2025, REAL ID deadline approaches, Google highlights that an ID Pass created from your U.S. passport can help you pass through TSA security checks for domestic flights at participating airports. Keep in mind that this digital ID is not a substitute for your physical driver’s license or state-issued ID – it simply provides a convenient backup.

Additional Features and Uses for Digital IDs

Google Wallet is set to offer even more benefits. Soon, you’ll be able to use your digital ID for:

  • Recovering Amazon accounts
  • Accessing online health services via CVS and MyChart by Epic
  • Verifying profiles on platforms such as Uber

These enhancements are designed to streamline the verification process across a wide range of services and websites.

International Expansion and New Verification Technologies

The expansion isn’t only limited to the U.S. Residents in the U.K. will soon be able to create digital ID passes using their U.K. passports and store them securely in Google Wallet. Although a detailed list of the 50 additional countries has not been disclosed, this development underscores Google’s commitment to broadening access to digital credentials globally.

Enhanced Security with Zero-Knowledge Proof

With verification required by numerous services, Google has developed a system that not only confirms a user’s age but also safeguards their privacy. This is achieved by integrating zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) technology into Google Wallet, enabling fast and secure age verification across mobile devices, apps, and websites using its digital credential API.

Google intends to leverage ZKP in other products and has even partnered with platforms like Bumble, which will use these digital IDs for identity authentication and age verification. Moreover, Google plans to open source its ZKP technology for use in other wallets and online services.
